Until last week’s interview with an Ohio radio station, Washington hadn’t heard from or seen much of Helen Thomas. On Friday, however, the veteran White House correspondent was spotted at the National Press Club attending the annual Fourth Estate Award Dinner honoring Bob Schieffer, a spy reports. The event featured Schieffer’s band Honky Tonk Confidential and included a roast of Schieffer by former Sen. Sam Nunn, Sen. Lindsey Graham, CBS News President Sean McManus and Schieffer’s wife, Pat.
On Saturday, actor Robert Duvall was spotted at the Gold Cup at Great Meadow in The Plains, Va. The semiannual steeplechase race attracts a slew of Washingtonians. Also on Saturday, we hear Tom Daschle was driving up Wisconsin Avenue with wife Linda in a gold BMW convertible with the top down. The former Senate majority leader was wearing his trademark red-frame eyeglasses.
And the stars who appeared at Saturday’s Susan G. Komen for the Cure gala were enjoying Washington before the event as well. On Friday, Olivia Newton-John dined at Jose Andres’ tapas restaurant Jaleo with a friend. They enjoyed a lamb sandwich, a veggie sandwich and ordered the flan for dessert.
