New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will begin airing an ad on national television this week that touts his tough on crime message, and slams Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s approach to the law. The 30-second televised advertisement appears designed to boost the governor’s standing in national polls and help lift him back onto the primetime GOP presidential debate stage.
“Lawlessness in America and around the world under Barack Obama,” Christie can be seen saying. “Now Hillary Clinton thinks the law doesn’t apply to her. Really? We need a strong law-enforcer as president. Someone who says what he means and means what he says. We can do it. Let’s make America a leader again.”
The ad depicts examples of lawlessness during President Obama’s tenure, including sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants, drug addiction, the Islamic State beheading Christians, and “Iranian radicals and nuclear weapons.” The campaign spot will make its nationwide debut on Fox this Wednesday.
Christie’s position in national polls places him in danger of not making the next primetime GOP presidential debate. According to RealClearPolitics’ average of polls, Christie finishes behind 10 other GOP presidential candidates including Carly Fiorina who moved into the upper tier following her performance on Fox News’ debate stage earlier this month.
While 16 major GOP presidential candidates have received invitations to participate in the next debate, only 10 will make the main event. Christie presently sits one percentage point behind three men tied for the final spot — Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
Christie benefits from a better performance in earlier polling, however, as CNN will consider surveys released from July 16, 2015, to September 10, 2015, to determine how to stock its stage.
