Carson: Gun control ‘doesn’t work for the crazies’

Oregon has some of the strictest gun control measures in America and Ben Carson isn’t surprised they did not stop the shooting at Umpqua Community College Thursday.

During a press conference in Ankeny, Iowa, Friday afternoon, Carson argued that gun control is only something that can only work for the “law-abiding citizen,” adding further that “it doesn’t work for crazies.” Carson’s comments come a day after 10 students were murdered and another seven injured in a mass shooting at the Oregon school.

“We should be looking at all of the incidents where we have these people who go out and commit these horrendous crimes to find out as much as we can about what type of person does this because we need early warnings so that we can begin to intervene when we see that kind of evidence so that that incident does not occur,” Carson said. “That’s the way to handle it.

“You’re not going to handle it with more gun control because gun control only works for the normal law-abiding citizen,” Carson added. “It doesn’t work for crazies.”

Carson’s comments echo his Thursday remarks to radio host Hugh Hewitt, in which he said that gun control is not the issue at hand — but rather the mental well-being of individuals that may commit such an act.

“The issue is the mentality of these people,” Carson said. “And we need to be looking at the mentality of these individuals and seeing if there are any early warning clues that we can gather that will help us as a society to be able to identify these people ahead of time.”
