Trump on top nationally just before tight Iowa caucuses

Donald Trump continues to dominate the Republican presidential field nationally with less than two weeks until the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses.

With 38 percent, the billionaire businessman tops Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who garners 21 percent in the latest NBC News/Survey Monkey weekly tracking poll. Those numbers are essentially unchanged from the prior week, and those two candidates are virtually tied in the latest polls in Iowa.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio earned 11 percent nationally in the NBC poll, followed by 8 percent for Ben Carson. No other GOP candidate garnered more than four percent.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton continues to lead Bernie Sanders by 16 points — 52 percent to 36 percent, also unchanged from the prior week. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley earned just 1 percent.

The online poll was conducted Jan. 11-17, surveying 10,320 adults who said they are registered voters.
