Family of CIA contractor killed in Benghazi may sue the U.S. government

The family of Glen Doherty has filed a claim seeking more than $2 million from the U.S. government.

Doherty, a former Navy Seal, was killed in the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

His family is seeking $1 million from the CIA and State Department for wrongful death.

A second $1 million claim against the CIA and State Department was filed by Sean Lake, the executor of Doherty’s estate.

Doherty, 42, died along with Ambassador Chris Stevens and two other Americans when terrorists launched an attack against the U.S. consulate in Benghazi and fired on a CIA compound.

Doherty family attorney Michael Mortenson said if the government denies the claims they could file a lawsuit.

The Doherty family believes Glen Doherty died because the federal government failed to provide adequate protection to the consulate or CIA annex, a criticism that is echoed by lawmakers in Congress.

The House has appointed a House Select Committee to examine the Benghazi attack and the State Department’s involvement in securing the consulate ahead of the attack and its response during and after the attack.

“I know every member of this panel is dedicated to ensuring that our work honors the memories of the four Americans who were killed in Benghazi. Their names must etched in our memory banks,” Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said during the first meeting of the committee.

“Maybe, just maybe, we can be what those four brave men were. Neither Republican nor Democrat. Just Americans in pursuit of the facts,” Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-SC, said during the meeting.

Doherty died when he was hit by mortar rounds on the roof of the CIA compound.

The Doherty family expressed frustration with the government in a statement to the AP.

“We know Glen would have done anything to support the United States and protect our freedom as Americans,” the statement said. “Two years after the Benghazi attack, our family has not received the symbolic justice all families of such American heroes deserve.”
