For a VIP Dem, Palin puts aside politics

Hilary’s 50

Sure, Gov. Sarah Palin spent much of her time on the presidential campaign trail knocking her Democratic opponents for being out of touch, for being socialists or for “palling around with terrorists.”

But lest you think that Palin can’t cross party lines once in a while, we witnessed the governor wishing a happy birthday to … a Democrat.

The occasion? The 50th birthday bash of CNN contributor/Huffington Post editor/Brunswick Group LLC managing partner/former Recording Industry Association of America head Hilary Rosen, which was held at Georgetown’s L2 lounge Saturday night.

A video tribute was put together by Rosen’s longtime friend, media consultant and longtime television producer Tammy Haddad, and featured humorous cameo appearances from Anderson Cooper, Wolf Blitzer, Tucker Carlson, George Stephanopoulos, Donna Brazile, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Greta van Susteren.

But attendees did a collective jaw-drop when Palin appeared on screen to close out the video.

“Happy birthday, Hilary,” said Palin, and, anticipating the likely disbelief, she added, “Really.

“We’re very proud of you, of all of your success and your accomplishments. … Nothing but the best for the next 50 years, Hilary.”

The surprise video came courtesy of van Susteren, who persuaded Palin to do the shout-out while the Fox News anchor and friend of Rosen was in Alaska to interview the governor.

At the event to watch the video and toast Rosen was an impressive roster of political and media types: Tipper Gore, Arianna Huffington, Philippe Reines, Michael Feldman, Jane Harman, Debbie Dingell, Jessica Yellin, Matt Cooper, Betsy Fischer, Dan Glickman, Joe Lockhart, Michael Feldman, Patti Solis Doyle, Jeffrey Toobin, Deborah Lee, Gloria Borger, Jay Carney, Katherine O’Hearn, Jeremy Bash, David Gregory, Suzanne Malveaux, Michael Berman, Sally Sussman and Alex Castellanos.

Although plenty of VIP attendees had to behave themselves in order to remain fresh and sharp for Sunday morning’s talk show circuit, you could still spot Rosen, Blitzer, Brazile, Gregory, Carney and Borger getting jiggy with it on the dance floor.
