The trial for the Boston Marathon bombing suspect will not begin as scheduled.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s trial will not begin on Monday because jury selection is taking longer than anticipated, according to the U.S District Court in Boston’s office.
The process of selecting a jury is progressing “but in the interest of thoroughness is taking longer than originally anticipated,” Ginny Hurley of the federal court said in an email Thursday, adding the anticipated start date of Jan. 26 is “unrealistic.”
No new date has yet been set, according to the Associated Press.
Last week, U.S. District Court Judge George A. O’Toole Jr. denied a request by Tsarnaev’s attorney to delay jury selection because of the fear potential jurors would be prejudiced by the recent terror attacks in France.
Tsarnaev, who has pleaded not guilty, is charged with 30 federal counts in the April 15, 2013, bombings at the Boston Marathon finish line that killed three people and injured more than 260.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
