Biden shares her love of higher learning

Jill Biden gave a little taste of her teaching style when she appeared at the Center for American Progress to talk community colleges.

“My guess is that most people in this room are not community college graduates — is there anyone?” Biden said Wednesday as she surveyed the packed room for a show of hands.

“Oh, good for you,” she said to the half-dozen or so sheepish volunteers. “I could use you as my backup singers singing praises of the community college.”

But then Biden sang the song all by herself.

“Over the past 16 years, I have seen firsthand the power of community colleges to change lives, and that is in large part why I never really considered the possibility of not teaching in a community college after the inauguration last year,” Biden said, appearing along with CAP President and former Clinton White House Chief of Staff John Podesta.

She’s been teaching at the Northern Virginia Community College since last year and has made community colleges, along with military families, her big issue.

To combine the two, Biden invited Julia Frost to sit with her during Wednesday’s State of the Union address. Frost is a Coastal Carolina Community College student in North Carolina, a Marine Corps veteran and a military spouse. The two met when Biden visited the school.
