The Club for Growth PAC announced late Tuesday it will endorse Ted Cruz for the Republican presidential nomination.
The endorsement is the PAC’s first time backing a presidential candidate.
“This year is different because there is a vast gulf between the two leading republican candidates on matters of economic liberty,” Club for Growth President David McIntosh said in a statement. “Their records make clear that Ted Cruz is a consistent conservative who will fight to shrink the federal footprint, while Donald Trump would seek to remake government in his desired image.”
McIntosh added the group, which has poured millions into ads against the GOP front-runner, believes Cruz is the “best free-market, pro-growth, limited government candidates in the presidential race.”
The group previously supported Cruz during his 2012 Senate race in Texas. The Club was originally bundling contributions for Cruz, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, then later called Cruz and Rubio the “gold standards.” Cruz is the last of these candidates still in the race.
