Talking Points: July 10

Why are the Palestinians digging up Yasser Arafat’s body?

Eight years after the former leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization died, his body will be exhumed to assess claims that he was assassinated through poisoning, possibly by Israel. Arafat’s bones will be examined after a Swiss lab detected traces of a deadly radioactive agent on his clothing. French doctors blamed a stroke and blood condition for Arafat’s 2004 death at age 75, but the blood condition’s cause was never specified. Israel denies any involvement in Arafat’s death.

What’s Kwame Brown doing these days?

The former D.C. Council chairman, who pled guilty to fraud and campaign finance charges in June, has remained largely out of sight since resigning from office. He’s done some traveling outside the D.C. area since stepping down and has taken to Twitter just twice: To write about Father’s Day and the introduction of a college football playoff. He’s to be sentenced in September.

Why is the IRS getting involved in health care?

The Internal Revenue Service will play a central role in implementing President Obama’s health care reforms, the so-called “Affordable Care Act.” The IRS will provide tax breaks and incentives to encourage people to get health insurance and enforce penalties against those without coverage. The new health care law will require the tax agency to create new regulations, forms, publications, computer programs and outreach programs explaining the new rules to taxpayers and preparers. The health care reforms have been called the most sweeping tax law changes in 20 years.
