Media bias definitely exists in the nation’s biggest newsrooms, including ABC, CBS and NBC News, and it clearly favors the Democratic, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough declared Monday.
His remarks were prompted by Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski and Bloomberg News’ Mark Halperin opining that the word “objective” doesn’t appear to apply to most journalists nowadays.
“[I]t never did!” an animated Scarborough exclaimed. “I’m sorry. Walter Cronkite, who we watched every day and we loved Walter Cronkite, he was liberal. Tim Russert, a guy that I loved and respected, who was the best of the best, was a liberal. Tom Brokaw, I’m guessing Tom, you know how much I love and respect him, I doubt Tom’s voted in the Republican primary before.”
His comments on media bias began as the panel discussed claims the third televised GOP debate, which was hosted by CNBC, featured what most agree were biased questions from the moderators.
“So when you say ‘objective,’ we Republicans have been forced to define ‘objective’ as people who are objective Democratic voters,” he added. “Outside of [Fox News’] Brit Hume, who has held a powerful position at ABC, NBC, or CBS in the past 30 years?” he asked. “You can’t do it and nobody here can do it. Name the single Republican that has hosted a Sunday show, that has been an anchor of a news network for the big three networks over the past 50 years: you can not do it!”
Pushed to think of a few examples of major Republican-affiliated news hosts, Halperin could only come up with former White House spokesman Tony Snow and John McWethy of ABC News, both of whom died in 2008.
The Bloomberg News reporter had little choice but to agree with Scarborough.
“I agree with you 100 percent,” he said, “there’s huge liberal media bias. Not just in the examples you’ve given, but in less prominent people. All I’m saying is find the few people who don’t fit in that category and get objective journalists.”
Scarborough interjected, “You can’t, because they’re all Democrats! The people that run the Sunday shows are all Democrats. The people that have run the network newscasts, the nightly newscasts have all been Democrats, the network executives have been all Democrats.”
“We put up with the BS and the cultural slander and the cultural bias,” he added. “At some point, the mainstream media is going to have to realize that they are embarrassing themselves in 2015. Because all they do is hire liberals to run Sunday shows and nightly news.”
