Donald Trump disputed reports that former President Bill Clinton called him prior to his 2016 decision, saying Wednesday that Clinton called “long after” he made up his mind.
Appearing on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” Trump said while Clinton did indeed call, he called “long after I made my decision,” adding that Clinton was “very unhappy,” in Trump’s opinion, when he found out what the Republican businessman’s intentions were.
“He did call me, and the reason — and by the way, he called me after,” Trump said. “There’s a lot of false reporting. He called me after I made my decision, and in my opinion, he was very unhappy when he heard what the outcome was. He called me long after I made my decision. I made my decision, and I think — and you know, look, I have nothing against anybody, but I think that wanted to find out if I was actually doing it. But he called after I made, not before I made my decision.”
Trump’s statement contrasts with a report last week prior to Thursday’s GOP debate that Clinton had called in late May as the real estate mogul was in the midst of coming to a decision.
“And I said to people, look, they would know if I run because my whole life has been about winning,” Trump said. “That’s what we need in this country. I think that they would know — and he understands me well enough, that it’s going to be their worst nightmare. I will be their worst nightmare.”
Trump and the Clintons have a history, with the businessman donating $100,000 to the Clinton Foundation, while also contributing to Hillary Clinton’s senatorial campaign. The Clintons also attended Trump’s wedding to his current wife, Melania Knauss.
