The line to reach aisle 120 wrapped four lanes back, crowded with fans to see former first lady Laura Bush at the Arlington Costco on Thursday.
“Should I ask her to sign it to Sam?” one person asked a friend. (Fat chance, they would soon find out.)
“Where’s your Costco card?” an employee demanded to bystanders, who were required to flash their cards like ID just to stand in line.
After zigzagging through two aisles, those in line surrendered their belongings and were escorted through a metal detector on to the main attraction.
Copies of Bush’s new book, “Spoken From the Heart,” were handed over to staff and passed on to Bush, who looked radiant (almost airbrushed) under Costco lighting.
Bush rushed guests along with a quick thanks, an unpersonalized note and a smile. Yeas & Nays wanted to know why, as reviewers have pointed out, she breezed over her courtship with W. “You’ll have to read it,” Bush said. “You’ll find out that I did,” she added in defense.
