Reid predicts more support for Iran deal

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., hinted to reporters on Monday that support would pick up for the Iran nuclear agreement in the coming days.

Reid’s spokesman Adam Jentleson tweeted that Reid spoke to reporters and said, “I expect another couple of votes coming out in the next few days” in favor of the deal.

Reid on Sunday finally came out in favor of the agreement, after leaving it unclear whether he’s side with Obama, or side with some in his home state who oppose the deal.

“After years of study and months of careful review of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and its predecessor agreement, I support this agreement because I believe it is the best path to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” Reid said.

While not all the votes are lined up, Democrats are expected to be able to help President Obama sustain his veto of a resolution disapproving of the agreement. Assuming Congress can pass that resolution, Obama is expected to veto it, and Republicans will need 13 Democrats in the Senate to get to 67 votes to override Obama.

So far, there are just two Senate Democrats who have said they will oppose the deal, Sens. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, and Chuck Schumer of New York. About a dozen other Democrats have yet to declare a position, but if a few more say they’ll support it, it would be enough to ensure a victory in the Senate for Obama.
