Bernie Sanders said early Wednesday that he his presidential campaign will continue until the Democratic Party’s July convention, even though he lost all five primary contests to Hillary Clinton on Tuesday.
“I congratulate Secretary Clinton on her victories on Tuesday. I also want to thank the millions of voters across the nation who supported our campaign and elected delegates who will take us all the way to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia,” the Vermont senator said in a statement.
“With more than half the delegates yet to be chosen and a calendar that favors us in the weeks and months to come, we remain confident that our campaign is on a path to win the nomination,” he said.
Rival Hillary Clinton picked up four wins on Tuesday, in Florida, Ohio, Illinois and North Carolina. Clinton was also ahead in Missouri by less than a third of one percent, a result that may require a recount.
According to the Associated Press, Clinton now has 1,094 delegates to Sanders’ 774.
“We think it would be very difficult, if not impossible, for him to overtake her at this point,” Clinton spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri said on CNN.
