Clinton wins Arkansas

Hillary Clinton continued her run through the South Tuesday night with a big win in the state where she used to be first lady.

Clinton beat Bernie Sanders in Arkansas, where her husband was governor from 1979 to 1981 and then again from 1983 to 1992. She has been dominating among black voters throughout the South, calling it her “firewall” against the Vermont socialist.

That is how things played out in Arkansas as well, where the Clintons have been political celebrities since the 1970s. While Clinton was controversial for using her maiden name when her husband was first elected state attorney general and then governor, there is considerable affection among Democrats there for the “Man from Hope” and his wife.

After the Clintons left town, Republicans have had a lot of success in Arkansas due to the rise of conservative Christians as a voting bloc. Mike Huckabee, a former 2016 Republican presidential candidate, succeeded Bill Clinton’s former lieutenant governor in the governorship.

Hillary Clinton is originally from Chicago and began her independent political career as a senator from New York. But she has performed well in the Southern states voting Tuesday.
