Poll: Americans most concerned about terrorism

In a matter of months, Americans’ concern about terrorism has increased nearly five-fold.

Following the deadly terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif., 16 percent of Americans consider terrorism to be the most important problem facing the United States, according to a new Gallup survey released Monday. This is a drastic increase since November, when just 3 percent agreed.

After terrorism, 13 percent say they are most worried about governance and leadership, 9 percent point to the economy, and 7 percent say guns is the country’s biggest problem.

Republicans are noticeably more likely than Democrats or independents to call terrorism the top issue. Twenty-four percent of Republicans said terrorism is the top issue, compared to 9 percent of Democrats and 15 percent of self-described independents.

The telephone survey of 824 U.S. adults was conducted Dec. 2-6 with an overall margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
