Hillary Clinton dropped by “Saturday Night Live’s” Season 41 premiere to have a heartfelt conversation with herself, show off her Donald Trump impression and, most importantly, continue her quest to appear more relatable to voters.
The sketch opened with host Miley Cyrus and castmember Beck Bennett in a bar discussing the presidential election. Cyrus mentioned how much she liked Carly Fiorina, and Bennett said he thought she would make “the best first female president.”
Cut to the bar, where Kate McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton sadly sipped a drink while Cecily Strong’s Huma Abedin tried to console her.
“Oh Huma, why won’t people just let me lead?” McKinnon’s Clinton asked incredulously. “Just give me the hammers and nails and let me fix it all!”
McKinnon’s Clinton turned to the bartender, who happened to be the real Hillary Clinton playing a bartender named Val.
“I’m just an ordinary citizen who believes the Keystone pipeline will destory the environment,” deadpanned Val while introducing herself, to which McKinnon’s Clinton responded: “It did take me a long time to decide that, but I am against it.
Val then asked for McKinnon Clinton’s ID. “I have a one-year-old granddaughter. She calls me madam president,” McKinnon’s Clinton said.
“I never would’ve guessed,” replied Val. “You give off such a young, cool vibe. You must live in Brooklyn.”
The conversation then turned to Trump. “All anyone wants to talk about is Donald Trump,” McKinnon’s Clinton lamented. Val responded, in her best Trump voice, which the real Clinton had clearly practiced, “Donald Trump? Isn’t he the one that’s like, ‘Ehhhh, you’re all losers?'”
McKinnon’s Clinton couldn’t hold back her laughter.
“You think he’ll win the primaries?” Val asked innocently.
“He must,” McKinnon’s Clinton said as her eyes widened and her body trembled. “I want to be the one to take him down. I’ll destroy him and mount his hair in the Oval Office!”
After a brief interruption by Darrell Hammond’s Bill Clinton, McKinnon’s Hillary told Val, “I wish you could be president,” to which Val replied, “Me too,” followed by one of Clinton’s classic politician belly laughs.
This wasn’t Clinton’s first “SNL” guest spot. She made an appearance on the campaign trail in 2008 and confronted Amy Poehler’s Hillary Clinton, though that sketch was much smaller than Saturday’s.
