45,000 drones fly into FAA registry

Drones seem to be a hot-ticket toy this holiday season.

More than 45,000 drones were registered with the Federal Aviation Administration during the first two days of its drone registration program, which opened Monday afternoon.

The FAA revealed the figures in a statement in which it announced that Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening its online registration for small unmanned aircraft systems would be temporarily shut down for maintenance.

The agency said it was seeing “strong initial demand” for drones with Christmas arriving by week’s end.

“According to industry estimates, as many as 400,000 small UAS could be sold during the holidays,” the FAA said in the statement.

The FAA announced its drone registry in October as a way to help keep track of drone users who violate safety regulations.
