Eight-time Olympic medalist Apolo Anton Ohno was supposed to be inducted into the George Washington Spirits Society at the Distilled Spirits Council event at Mount Vernon last week, but if you recall, his father attended the ceremony on his behalf because Apolo was “recovering from a very serious viral infection.”
Yeas & Nays has learned through a source that an event sponsor was told the “serious infection” is shingles.
According to Ohno’s Twitter page, he started feeling ill back on Sept. 30. That’s when he tweeted, “Sick……going to get some rest.”
Though he didn’t give any specifics, in a tweet Oct. 6 (exactly one week later) he wrote, “Wish I was in DC speaking with kids for @ASKLISTENLEARN & the Century Council. I’ve been so ill that travel was not an option….But! #FB”.
Speculation or shingles? We called and e-mailed Ohno’s media contacts, but didn’t hear back.
