Marco Rubio’s remarks about diversity accomplished a rare feat at Thursday night’s presidential debate — he drew applause from his opponents, including Ted Cruz.
After Cruz noted that two of the candidates on the stage were the descendants of Cuban immigrants and a third was black, Rubio sought to advance the point further in an attack on Democrats.

“I do think it’s amazing that on the stage tonight there are two descendants of immigrants of Cuban origin, and an African-American. We are the party of diversity not the Democratic Party,” Rubio said. “We have to move past this idea that somehow the Hispanic community only cares about immigration.”
CNN’s presidential debate was characterized by the candidates’ biting back-and-forth attacks, but Rubio’s line signaled a point of criticism that any Republican candidate may choose to use in a general election.
Rubio is currently third in the Washington Examiner‘s presidential power rankings. Cruz is second.
