White House joins Snapchat

The White House has joined Snapchat, and announced on Monday that it will be used to provide a behind-the-scenes look at President Obama’s last State of the Union address on Tuesday.

“Today, we’re excited to announce that this push is continuing, with the debut of the White House’s Official Story on Snapchat,” Joshua Miller, the White House product management director, wrote in a blog post Monday.

The Obama administration’s further expansion into social media mirrors the steps it took in 2015. Obama became the first sitting president to have his own Twitter and Facebook pages last year.

“In light of the number of Americans who use the service to consume news and share with their friends, the White House is joining Snapchat to engage this broad cross-section of the population in new and creative ways,” Miller said. “Tomorrow, our Official Story will take you behind the scenes of the White House’s State of the Union preparations, with footage and angles you won’t find anywhere else.”

Users can follow the White House by adding “WhiteHouse” as a friend on Snapchat.

The White House also announced that Obama will continue a tradition he started after his first State of the Union address in 2010, by answering questions online through Google and YouTube.

On Friday at 2:15 p.m. Eastern time, three popular YouTube creators — Destin Sandlin, Ingrid Nilson and sWooZie — will host a live YouTube interview with Obama from the East Room.
