Despite the onslaught of criticism for his treatment of Fox News host Megyn Kelly, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he’s the leading candidate on women’s issues.
The controversial GOP front-runner said Monday on MSNBC‘s “Morning Joe” that he’s saving his policies prescriptions on women’s issues for a later date, but should be trusted as a champion for women nevertheless.
“All I can say is on women’s issues and women’s health issues there will be nobody better than Donald Trump,” the New York businessman told host Joe Scarborough. “But I’ll be coming out with some policy on that.”
“I just don’t want to discuss it now,” he said.
The former “Celebrity Apprentice” host was disinvited from the RedState Gathering of conservatives in Atlanta, Ga., over the weekend after making controversial remarks about Kelly on Twitter and in the media.
During an interview on CNN last Friday, Trump said “you could see blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever” in reference to Kelly’s question during the first GOP primary debate about his history of making disparaging remarks against women.
“I don’t want my daughter in the room with Donald Trump tonight, so he’s not invited,” the host of the RedState Gathering, Erick Erickson, reportedly told conference-goers. “If our standard-bearer has to resort to that, then we need a new standard-bearer.”
A number of Trump’s GOP rivals rebuked him over the weekend, calling his comments about Kelly “divisive,” “unrelenting,” and “offensive” and decrying his behavior as inexcusable.
“When I started this campaign, I was asked on a national television show whether a woman’s hormones prevented her from serving in the oval office. My response was, can we think of a single instance in which a man’s hormones might have clouded his judgment?” Carly Fiorina, the only woman running for the nomination on the Republican side, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday.
“I can,” Tapper responded.
“Yeah, me too. Maybe in the oval office,” Fiorina said. “The point is, women understood that comment and yes, it is offensive.”
