Reid weighs possibility of brokered Dem convention

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid weighed the possibility of Democrats having a brokered convention in July if neither Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders are unable to secure a pre-existing majority of delegates by then.

Reid mused over the idea in an interview with CNN Thursday, telling Jake Tapper the race does not show any signs it will die down in the next five months, gridlock that could produce a brokered convention. But the senate leader added there was no reason to fear that outcome.

“Some of the old conventions produced some good people … It would be kind of fun,” Reid said.

But the Nevada senator warned the Feb. 20 primary in his home state will be close. It was one primary that Clinton had hoped to have the upper hand over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

But fellow Democratic politician, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, stopped short of describing the primary process as all fun and games for the two candidates who are locked neck-in-neck. The Democratic National Committee chairwoman has said she does not expect a contested convention.

“Clinton won one of the states already, Sanders won another state already, there’s one more state, Nevada, then South Carolina. No matter what happens in Nevada or South Carolina, the race is going to go on,” Reid added.
