Poll: Most Republicans embarrassed about 2016 race

Six in 10 Republicans say they are embarrassed about the 2016 presidential race, according to a new poll.

That number is compared to 13 percent of Democrats who say the same of their party’s race, according to a new New York Times/CBS News poll.

Eighty-eight percent of Republicans view their party as divided, compared to 33 percent of Democrats who say they consider their own party to be divided.

In addition, a slim majority of Republicans — 51 percent — have a favorable opinion of their front-runner Donald Trump. More Republicans — 58 percent — say the tone of this year’s presidential race is more negative than past ones.

The poll also found that Trump holds a double-digit lead in the GOP race over rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich, while Hillary Clinton maintains her lead over Bernie Sanders on the Democratic side.

And while seven in 10 Democratic voters expect Clinton to be the nominee, 56 percent say they would enthusiastically support Sanders if he were the nominee, compared to 40 percent for Clinton. That’s an 8-point drop for Clinton and a 12-point boost for Sanders over the past month.

The telephone poll of 1,252 adults, including 362 Republicans and 388 Democrats, was conducted March 17-20 and carries an an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
