El Chapo recaptured, Mexico’s president says

The Mexican president announced the recapture of notorious fugitive and drug lord Joaquin Guzman Loera, “El Chapo,” Friday.

“Mission accomplished: We have him. I want to inform Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been arrested,” Enrique Pena Nieto tweeted from his account Friday. (The original message was in Spanish.)

“My appreciation to the Security Cabinet of the Ggvernment of the Republic for this important achievement for the rule of law in Mexico,” Nieto added.

Guzman escaped on July 11, the second time in his criminal career that he has escaped Mexican authorities.

Guzman is believed to head up the Sinaloa Cartel.

Guzman has been ranked by Forbes as a billionaire and one of the world’s wealthiest, and is viewed by analysts as perhaps the most financially successful and powerful drug trafficker in history.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest was asked about the capture during his press conference Friday, but said he had not yet been briefed on the capture and had no comment, since its announcement occurred while Earnest was speaking.
