Shots fired at Mississippi training base for second day in a row

A motorist fired shots near a Mississippi National Guard training base on Wednesday morning for the second day in a row, pushing the base to a heightened state of alert.

Soldiers at the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center reported that shots were fired near the base in Hattiesburg, Miss., at the same location as the shooting less than 24 hours earlier Tuesday, according to a statement from the Mississippi National Guard.

“The shooter is described as a white male in a red pickup truck, make and model unknown. This is the same description of the man described to authorities during yesterday’s incident,” the statement said. “The Camp Shelby Joint Forces training center is currently at a heightened state of alert.”

No personnel were injured in either shooting, the statement said. The military is working with local authorities to locate the shooter.

Camp Shelby is one of several bases hosting service members participating in Jade Helm, a training exercise that sparked controversy among some conspiracy theorists that the exercise was a cover for the Pentagon launching an attack on southern U.S. states.

The shootings come just weeks after an attack in Chattanooga, Tenn., at a recruiting office and Navy reserve support center that left five service members dead. As a result of that attack, the Defense Department is reviewing ways to increase security at military installations, such as recruiting offices or college ROTC units that are not on a base.
