Obama’s Supreme Court pick is ‘reasonably into Taylor Swift’

The senior White House adviser who helped President Obama choose a replacement for the late Justice Antonin Scalia said Friday that the nominee, Judge Merrick Garland, is a fan of pop star Taylor Swift.

White House adviser Brian Deese attended a Politico “Playbook Breakfast” Friday morning in Washington. During the breakfast, he admitted that he has grown to like Swift’s style because his young daughter forces him to listen to the pop star on occasion.

He then mentioned that Garland has a blank space in his heart for Swift as well.

“I’ve felt a little more self-conscious about that until, in the last week or two, getting to know Judge Garland is also reasonably into Taylor Swift,” Deese said, according to The Hill. “I feel like I’m in pretty good company in that respect.”

When asked if Garland ever sings along to Swift’s songs, he said, “That’s why we have hearings,” not letting Garland out of the woods yet on the subject.

The Obama administration has been fighting an uphill battle to get Senate Republicans to give Garland a formal appointment hearing, something they pledged not to do.

Garland has been able to shake off the bad blood so far. According to Deese, he met with 10 senators this week and plans to meet with 11 more next week, including Republicans Susan Collins and John Boozman.
