Sarandon prefers no handcuffs when in D.C.

Sending out an O-ba-ma

Now that Barack Obama is president, have we seen the end of Susan Sarandon protesting around town? Probably not, but she managed to stay on the right side of the law while in town for the inauguration.

“I’m usually in Washington for painful events, getting arrested,” she said at Tuesday night’s Creative Coalition Gala, held at the Harman Center for the Arts. “It’s nice to be here for a joyous occasion and not have orange cuffs.”

Local gal Kerry Washington doesn’t have much experience in cuffs, but she’s happy for an end to the Bush era. “Power can come out of a tragedy, like the last eight years,” the actress said.

Elvis Costello kicked off the entertainment by joking, “Why did they pick me? All my songs are depressing. Isn’t this supposed to be a celebration?”

Next up: Sting, who introduced his song “Brand New Day” by saying, “I wrote a song for the millennium about hope and change, and it was eight f—ing years too early.”

He ended the evening with The Police classic “Message in a Bottle,” turning the chant of “SOS” at the end into “O-ba-ma.”
