Copyright hoax citing a convention that didn’t happen takes over Facebook

Facebook users have been duped again.

A fake Facebook copyright message is going around the social media website, claiming to be a way to protect users’ posts.

The status typically reads something to the tune of: “In response to the new Facebook guidelines, I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, comics, paintings, professional photos and videos, etc. (as a result of the Berner Convention). For commercial use of the above my written consent is needed at all times!”

But according to Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, Facebook doesn’t own any posts, despite what the hoax says, according to ABC News.

Furthermore, there is also no such thing as the Berner Convention — whoever started the hoax probably meant the Berne Convention, which internationally protects literary and artistic works.

At any rate, your Facebook profile is safe.
