Two “top secret” emails from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that are being reviewed by the intelligence community’s inspector general include discussion of an article about a U.S. drone operation.
A separate conversation also took place that could point back to highly classified material in an improper manner, though it could also reflect information collected independently, U.S. officials told the Associated Press.
The AP said the two emails on drones were classified after a discussion with the CIA, and said the classified information originated with the CIA.
Clinton, the Democratic presidential front-runner, has faced extreme scrutiny after it was revealed she used a private server and her own email address while at the State Department. She revealed earlier this week that she would have her aides turn over her private email server and a backup thumb drive to the Justice Department.
But the server Clinton turned over has no information on it, and was stripped of all of Clinton’s emails.
Clinton made the announcement hours after Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, sent a memo to lawmakers revealing the inspector general found four “highly classified” emails out of a batch of 40. According to Clinton and her camp, she did not send or received any emails on her personal account with classified information. So far she has turned over roughly 30,000 emails; during her four years as secretary of sate, she sent or received around 60,000.
