Murdoch praises space pioneer Elon Musk

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch is impressed with the work Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk has done in the commercial space industry.

In a tweet Saturday, Murdoch, whose News Corp media empire includes Fox News, said “American innovation! Nothing beats SpaceX,” citing the aerospace company founded by Musk.

“Quickly becomes world leader in massive space business,” he added. “All made in US. Triumph for Elon Musk.”

Musk announced Dec. 31 that the most recent launch of SpaceX’s reusable Falcon 9 was a success. Last month the rocket was fired out of Earth’s atmosphere, where it unloaded several satellites into orbit, and returned with “no damage found.”

The Falcon 9 is “ready to fire again,” Musk announced on Instagram with a photo of the rocket in a Cape Canaveral hangar.”

The announcement that the rocket could be reused may change the commerical space industry. The Falcon 9 costs $60 million to manufacture, but only $200,000 to refuel.

SpaceX also used Falcon 9 rockets to launch its Dragon cargo spacecraft to resupply the International Space Station. The last mission, in June, failed when the rocket exploded.

Murdoch also commented on Musk’s remarks that the human race needs to be wary of its increasing advanced forays into artificial intelligence.

“Musk worries about AI. hope he leads the charge, regardless of Google friendships,” said Murdoch, adding “Time running out.”

Murdoch was most likely referring to remarks made by Musk back in October of 2014 to a gathering of Massachusetts Institute of Technology students.

“I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I were to guess like what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that. So we need to be very careful with the artificial intelligence,” he said.

“With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon. In all those stories where there’s the guy with the pentagram and the holy water, it’s like yeah he’s sure he can control the demon. Didn’t work out,” Musk added.
