Applegate: Franken and Markey grill Steve Jobs

By now, most Apple customers have heard that both the iPhone and 3G iPad are regularly recording the positions of their devices into a hidden file, but if you’re worried that someone over at Apple might snatch all that cached data about you and use it for evil, you’re not alone. Turns out Sen. Al Franken and Rep. Ed Markey are worried, too, so they’ve both written letters to Apple CEO Steve Jobs asking him to explain how and why such information is collected, and why it hasn’t been encrypted. In his letter to Jobs, Franken wrote, “because this data is stored in multiple locations in an unencrypted format, there are various ways that third parties could gain access to this file … There are numerous ways in which this information could be abused by criminals and bad actors.”
