Trump on ‘Tonight Show’

Donald Trump interviewed himself on “The Tonight Show.” That is, himself as impersonated as Jimmy Fallon.

“Me interviewing me,” Trump said Friday night. “That’s what I call a great idea.”

The two men faced each other in a set designed as a dressing room, with Fallon posing as Trump’s reflection. Most of the parody conversation was humorous, designed more to get laughs from the audience than for Trump to say what policies he would support as president.

At one point, the two joked about Trump’s vows to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing the border. Asked by Fallon how he would do that, Trump retorted,” Since I’m you, why don’t you tell me?”

“How am I going to get Mexico to build the wall?” Fallon posing as Trump responded. “Easy: I’ll challenge them to the biggest game of Jenga ever. I’ll make them set up the board. And then when they finish, I’ll say I don’t want to play anymore.”

At another point, Fallon asked Trump whether he would choose Gary Busey as his vice president, and Trump responded that the actor is more Supreme Court justice material. Instead, he said he might choose rapper Kanye West, who recently announced he plans to run for president in 2020.

Even Fallon’s more serious questions kept the audience rolling in laughter. “I recently said … I want to lower taxes for the middle class. How else do you plan to help the economy,” Fallon asked.

“Look, I’m really rich,” Trump replied. “I know how to run a business and I know this: Our country’s going to be better off with me.”

There was also an interview portion of the segment, in which Trump spoke at more length about his front-runner status. The billionaire celebrity has surprised political watchers by remaining at the top of a crowded field of GOP presidential hopefuls.
