Rick Santorum to announce 2016 plans May 27

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum will announce his decision on whether he will make another run for the Republican presidential nomination on May 27 in Pittsburgh.

Santorum, who served in the Senate from 1995 to 2007, also ran for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination. Though he would go on to drop out in favor of eventual nominee Mitt Romney, he had a strong showing in the primaries, winning 11 state contests.

If he does decide to join the 2016 race officially, he joins an already crowded field of declared candidates including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, candidates who appeal to the social conservative base he guns for.

Santorum already has a testing-the-waters campaign which has helped him take trips to early-voting states such as South Carolina and Iowa.

According to a RealClearPolitics average of polls, he is currently polling 11th, with 2h percentage points. Four candidates have a double-digit level of support, including leader Jeb Bush with 15.5 percentage points.
