Iran will only sign a final nuclear deal if all sanctions are lifted on the same day.
In a televised speech Thursday marking Iran’s National Day of Nuclear Technology, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said his country wants the nuclear talks to be a “win-win” deal for all parties involved.
“We will not sign any deal unless all sanctions are lifted on the same day […] Our goal in the talks (with major powers) is to preserve our nation’s nuclear rights. We want an outcome that will be in everyone’s benefit,” Rouhani said. “The Iranian nation has been and will be the victor in the negotiations.”
Since the framework for a deal regarding Iran’s nuclear power capabilities was agreed upon last week between Iran, the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia, there have been some discrepancies between what the U.S. believes the guidelines dictate and what Tehran thinks they do — especially in regards to United States and United Nations nuclear-related economic sanctions.
Iran wants the sanctions — which have crippled its economy — lifted immediately; the U.S. says they will be lifted gradually.
“Our main gain in the talks was the fact that U.S. President Barack Obama acknowledged that Iranians will not surrender to bullying, sanctions and threats,” Rouhani said. “It is a triumph for Iran that the first military power in the world has admitted Iranians will not bow to pressure.”
Negotiations from Iran, the U.S. and five other countries are to resume talks in the coming days with a common goal of a June 30 deadline for a final nuclear deal.
