President Obama ramped up his new personal Twitter account @POTUS Thursday afternoon with a live Q&A session that was open to the public.
From the National Hurricane Center in Miami, which he had just visited and where he discussed storm preparedness and climate change, he fielded questions about a massive pending trade deal, federal college funding programs, climate change and basketball. Yes, basketball.
With the president ready to answer on a wide variety of subjects, two Twitter users took the opportunity to ask the commander in chief about his favorite sport.
Nathen Viera, with an eponymous handle, asked @POTUS “can JR Smith out shoot Steph Curry and lead the Cavs to a championship?” referring to the NBA finals. Then he followed up with: “will JR Smith heat up enough in the Finals to destroy the O-Zone and the Warriors?” To which Obama answered: “jr smith having a great season but the heart of the Cavs is Lebron. And no one can outshoot Curry — maybe Korver if wide open.”
Viera, who according to his profile is a writer for @NoCoastBias, was pretty excited to receive a response, tweeting later: “Woke up today not friends with Obama. I’ll end today being boys with Obama.”
Viera wasn’t the only one to get Obama to weigh in on hoops, though instead of asking about the Golden State Warriors versus the Cavaliers, @apat246, aka Akshar Patel asked about Obama’s Chicago Bulls. “[T]he climate is great, how do you feel about the firing of coach Tom Thibodeau?” But Obama didn’t go into super fan mode, answering diplomatically: “love thibs and think he did a great job. Sorry to see him go but expect he will be snatched up soon by another team.”
