Kerry scolds Russia for buzzing U.S. destroyer

Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that the U.S. isn’t happy that a Russian military plane buzzed a U.S. destroyer this week.

“The secretary also registered our strong objections to the unsafe maneuvers executed by Russian military aircraft over the USS Donald Cook in the Baltic Sea,” Kirby said Friday. He said Kerry and Lavrov spoke by phone.

Russian SU-24 jets “buzzed” the U.S. destroyer on Monday during planned exercises.

While the move outraged many in the U.S., experts said Russia was likely to face only a scolding from the Obama administration, as there aren’t many tools available to the U.S. to enforce a U.S.-Russia agreement on “the prevention of incidents on and over the high seas.”
