The Democratic Party is “much more progressive, liberal” than at any time in the last 40 years, said retiring Sen. Tom Harkin.
In a ride-off-into-the-sunset video interview with the Washington Post, the Iowa Democrat said that “as the Republican Party got rid of all their liberals and all the progressives and the Republican party moved to the right, the only home for a lot of those people was the Democratic Party.
“So they moved over, and I think the Democratic Party has become more liberal and progressive as a rebalance of the Republicans moving much further to the right.”
Harkin has served in the Senate since 1985.
Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley and Republican Joni Ernst are running to replace Harkin.
