Cruz: Donald Trump is Washington

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said Sunday that “Donald Trump is the system.”

Cruz, who hopes to make the GOP nomination fight a two-man race, assailed the GOP front-runner in a bid to cast himself as the real outsider in the contest.

“I’m angry, too, but Donald has been enmeshed in that Washington corruption for 40 years,” Cruz said on “This Week.”

Cruz continued try to flip Trump’s reputation as a effective dealmaker —usually seen a strength by voters —on its head.

“Donald doesn’t focus on small business,” Cruz said. “He focuses on Washington and deal-making and big business,” Cruz said.

“Donald Trump is the system,” Cruz said. “He is Washington.”

Some argue that Cruz’s own claim to be a D.C. outsider is contradicted by his career in politics, which includes a Supreme Court clerkship, work for former President George W. Bush and his election to the Senate.

But Cruz’s claim benefits from the antipathy he has won from many Senate Republicans.

Cruz was the only candidate to finish worse than Trump in Saturday’s D.C. primary. Washington seems to prefer Marco Rubio and John Kasich.
