Sen. Marco Rubio’s campaign won the backing of major bundler and top donor to Mitt Romney Wednesday as his campaign tries to gain momentum heading into Thanksgiving.
Idaho billionaire Frank VanderSloot announced in a letter Wednesday he is moving forward and backing the Florida senator, who is currently positioned behind Donald Trump and Ben Carson in most polls.

“Marco Rubio is the brightest and most capable candidate. He has the uncanny ability to state his positions clearly in a way that resonates with the average voter,” VanderSloot said in the letter.
“In our opinion, Marco Rubio far exceeds the other candidates as meeting our requirements to be the best president, and he, importantly, is by far the most electable,” VanderSloot wrote, singling out Sen. Ted Cruz and Trump as “not electable” in the general election.
He admitted that they also considered Carson, Jeb Bush and Carly Fiorina, saying that Fiorina was the group’s second choice. VanderSloot and his team intimated that they are worried that Carson does not possess “the international knowledge or skill set” on foreign policy issues, and argued that Bush “simply does not have the leadership skills” to unite.
VanderSloot is the founder of Malaleuca, a health products company, and a long-time contributor to Romney — having served as his national finance co-chairman in both 2008 and 2012.
Rubio’s campaign welcomed the billionaire with open arms, with communications director Alex Conant tweeting that they are “thrilled” to bring him aboard.
