Add a Darren Wilson resignation to the list of possible events soon to come from Ferguson, Mo.
The Ferguson police officer, who fatally shot and killed teenager Michael Brown on Aug. 9, may resign based on what a St. Louis County grand jury decides within the next few days, sources told CNN.
Though he maintains his innocence in the shooting, Wilson may resign from the police force if he doesn’t get indicted, both to protect his fellow officers and ease tensions among the community, where it is widely believed that he will return to work if he is not indicted.
Even if Wilson is indicted, he may resign, assumably to ease tensions and paint himself in a better light ahead of a trial, but he is worried that floating the idea of resignation would impact the jury’s decision.
Talks to resign could still change at any moment, according to CNN’s sources.
The St. Louis County grand jury is meeting Friday for what could be a final session to decide whether to indict and charge Wilson. A public announcement is expect to come within 48 hours, to give law enforcement time to prepare for reactions based on the decision.
Ahead of the decision, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency, as protests are expected based on the grand jury’s decision.
Sunday marked the 100th day of protests, as racial tensions in the Ferguson and surrounding St. Louis areas continue to heat up and garner national attention.
