Malaysia confirms debris came from missing Flight 370

Plane debris recovered off of the Coast of France’s Réunion Island was part of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

“We now have physical evidence that, as I announced on 24 March last year, flight MH370 tragically ended in the southern Indian Ocean,” Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak confirmed Wednesday.

The flight from Kuala Lumpur en route to Beijing went mysteriously missing in March 2014 with 239 passengers and crew on board. Plane debris was found off the coast of the Indian Ocean island last week.

Investigators and representatives from the airline manufacturer Boeing Co. were able to tie the found debris to the doomed Boeing 777 flight. The part found on Reunion is a flaperon, a movable panel on the rear of the wing.

It is still unclear what brought down the plane.

“This is indeed a major breakthrough for us in resolving the disappearance of MH370,” Malaysia Airlines said in a statement. “We expect and hope that there would be more objects to be found which would be able to help resolve this mystery.”
