Nearly two-thirds of Republican millennials favor marijuana legalization.
While 63 percent of Republicans born between 1981 and 1996 think marijuana should be made legal, 77 percent of Democrats born during the same time agree, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.
“The debate over marijuana also comes ahead of the 2016 presidential election, when both political parties are fighting over the coveted Millennial vote as this group of eligible voters swells in size, even if its members do not consistently show up on Election Day,” Pew noted.
The gap between Republicans and Democrats remained evident in those surveyed who were older, though support for marijuana legalization decreased.
Nearly half (47 percent) of Republican Gen-Xers, or people born between 1965 and 1980 say marijuana should be legal; 61 percent of Democrats concur.
The survey comes on the heels of marijuana legalization in Alaska and Washington, D.C., which join Colorado and Washington. Medical marijuana is legal 23 in states.
