Romney to campaign for Kasich in Ohio

Mitt Romney will campaign for John Kasich in Ohio on Monday, one day before the Buckeye State’s primary.

Kasich, governor of Ohio, made the “major announcement” on social media. The two will appear together at two campaign events, one in North Canton at 2 p.m. EDT and the other in Westerville at 6 p.m. EDT.

“Governor Romney reached out offering to help, and we said absolutely,” Chris Schrimpf, a Kasich spokesman, told ABC News.

Romney has not yet endorsed any candidate.

Romney is back in the spotlight in recent weeks for publicly unloading on GOP front-runner Donald Trump. Romney called on Trump to release his tax returns, then in a recent speech, the former governor of Utah and 2012 Republican nominee called Trump a “con man,” a “phony” and a “fraud.”

Like Marco Rubio, another candidate in the 2016 race, Romney has called on Republican voters to vote for Kasich in his home state of Ohio and Rubio in his home state of Florida, in order to prevent Trump from reaching enough delegates for the party nomination.

He has also recorded anti-Trump robocalls for Kasich and Rubio.

“Let me put in very plainly,” Romney said during his speech at the University of Utah. “If we Republicans choose Donald Trump as our nominee, the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished.”
