Actor Mark Ruffalo encourages more Democracy Spring protesters to get arrested

Actor Mark Ruffalo applauded liberal activists who have protested outside the U.S. Capitol for three days.

But the “Hulk” star, who tweeted out support for more than 500 demonstrators who have been arrested in Democracy Spring’s three days of peaceful protests on the east side of the building, did not say if he intends to join the demonstrators.

“Much solidarity w/ those risking arrest at #DemocracySpring. Volunteer for actions this week http://pccc.me/1TRqBfZ,” tweeted Ruffalo, who lives in New York City.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee celebrated the celebrity’s attention, calling it a “hulk-sized endorsement” of the event. The group did not say if Ruffalo or other actors would travel to the nation’s capital to join more than 3,000 participants in the protests, overseen by 501(c)(4) 99 Rise.

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders also tweeted support for the protesters on Monday, but has not made an appearance.

U.S. Capitol Police arrested 85 protesters Tuesday and more than 400 people on Monday for crowding and obstructing the east steps of the Capitol building.

Those arrested in the Monday and Tuesday incidents are part of a week-long peaceful movement meant to insist that lawmakers overhaul campaign finance laws, specifically reversing the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision.

The group has called for three other reforms: updating voter registration procedures; developing a public campaign financing system; and restoring a provision of the Voting Rights Act that would allow Southern states to approve their own voting procedures.

The Democracy Spring movement started last week as participants marched from the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia to the nation’s capital to demand Congress take action to keep dark money and super PACs out of campaigns. The mass sit-in is expected to continue through Saturday.
