One of the first appointments Donald Trump will have to make will be to the Supreme Court, and that justice will definitely be pro-life and pro-Second Amendment.
That was the answer the president-elect gave in his first post election interview on “60 Minutes” Sunday night.
Trump will have to fill the vacancy because Republicans in the Senate refused to hold hearings on outgoing President Barack Obama’s nominee to the high court after Justice Antonin Scalia died early this year.
CBS’ Lesley Stahl asked Trump if he was “looking to appoint a justice who wants to overturn Roe v. Wade,” the 1973 decision that made abortion legal in all 50 states.
Trump said that he would and that he had another litmus test as well.
“I’m pro-life. The judges will be pro-life,” he said.
On “the whole gun situation,” he also added, “Everybody’s talking about the Second Amendment and they’re trying to dice it up and change it.”
Trump said that his judicial appointments are “going to be very pro-Second Amendment.”
He said that if Roe v. Wade were overturned that would not necessarily outlaw abortion but allow the 50 states to pass laws on the subject again.
Stahl wondered what would happen if certain states outlawed abortion and women there wanted to terminate their pregnancies.
“Perhaps,” Trump answered, “they’ll have to go to another state.”
“And that’s OK?” Stahl asked.
“Well, we’ll see what happens. It’s got a long way to go, just so you understand. There’s a long, long way to go,” the president-elect said.
