The U.S. is removing troops and special forces from the Al Anad air base in Yemen in the wake of suicide bombings Friday that left hundreds dead and wounded, according to several reports.
The group of about 100 military members is the last remaining U.S. force in the country, which has seen its security and stability damaged in recent months.
CNN and the Associated Press reported Saturday that the U.S. was evacuating the air base, citing Yemeni officials.
The U.S. embassy in Sanaa, the nation’s capital, was closed last month after the city was overtaken by Houthi rebels.
Saturday’s evacuation follows Friday’s suicide bombings of mosques associated with the rebels during prayers. The bombings killed more than 100 people and left hundreds dead and wounded. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria claimed to be responsible for the attacks.
Yemen is home to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a group considered one of the most dangerous branches of al Qaeda by the U.S. The U.S. had conducted drone strikes against militants with the cooperation of the Yemeni government within the past few months.
