It looks like Michele Bachmann won’t be using Tom Petty‘s “American Girl” as the soundtrack for her 2012 campaign. When she kicked off her run this week, the song played as she left the stage after giving her speech. The famed rocker’s manager has requested she not use the song for any of her campaign commercials or appearances from now on, according to NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell.
This isn’t the first time Petty has yanked his music from a politician. He sent a similar cease and desist order to President George W. Bush in 2000 asking him not to use his 1989 hit “I Won’t Back Down” on the campaign trail.
But it’s not just Petty pulling the plug on politicians. Talking Heads frontman David Byrne sued Florida Gov. Charlie Crist for using his song, “Road to Nowhere,” without permission, and Jackson Browne sued the GOP and Arizona Sen. John McCain for using his song, “Running on Empty,” on the campaign trail in 2008 — the same year that “soul man” Sam Moore told Barack Obama to not use his song “Hold On, I’m Comin'” for any of his campaign appearances.
