Report: State Department emails were hacked

Hackers found a way into the State Department’s emails, although nothing classified was compromised, department officials said.

The news was reported by the government technology website Nextgov.

According to State Department officials, the unclassified email system was hacked “in recent weeks,” and at the same time the White House email system was similarly compromised.

White House officials reported in late October that their computer system was breached, telling the Washington Post that nothing classified was obtained.

Russian hackers were suspected in the White House attack, White House officials said at the time.

Nextgov reported that the State Department breach occurred “simultaneously” to the White House incident and was perpetrated perhaps by Russia or China. The system was to undergo repairs over the weekend that will increase the system’s security for unclassified data but disrupt use.
